The new Alliance grant program will incentivize research carried out in collaboration with small- and medium-sized enterprises, industrial value chains, and multi-sectoral partnerships. It will also recognize the necessity of supporting high-risk, early-stage research carried out in collaboration with non-academic partners.Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada promotes and supports an active Discovery and Innovation dynamic by collaborating with nearly 3,800 public and private organizations. The results are profound: 20,000 full-time and part-time students are trained annually in industrial settings; 1 in 4 partner companies hired a student from the research project; 1 in 3 partners stated that the research results helped to reduce environmental impact; and 1 in 2 partners developed or improved a product, process or service. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada has a governing council consisting of the President and not more than 18 other members. The members are distinguished representatives from the private, academic, not-for-profit and public sectors appointed by the Governor in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister. The functions of the Council are to promote and assist research in the natural sciences and engineering, other than the health sciences; and to advise the Minister in respect of such matters relating to such research as the Minister may refer to the Council for its consideration.Council advises the President on strategy and high level policies for Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and reviews and evaluates performance. The Council works to achieve the greatest strategic impact for Canada from the expenditure of public funds, and ensures that public funds are allocated in a manner that maximizes research outcomes. Council members represent the Canadian public and rely upon their knowledge of current issues and trends in the natural sciences and engineering to strengthen the president’s ability to lead the organization with the conviction that comes from independent advice and, with the support of Council, to confidently account to the Minister and to Parliament for the decisions made, the resources expended, and the results achieved.Council is advised on policy and programming matters by standing committees that are responsible for overseeing, where appropriate, the work of selection committees and panels. The committee structure adopted by the Council enables it to devote most of its deliberations to broad policies, strategic direction and financial issues.
