Farm Credit Canada is a financially self-sustaining federal commercial Crown corporation reporting to Canadians and Parliament through the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. The corporation is comprised of a team of more than 2,100 employees operating from 99 offices located primarily in rural Canada, a government relations office in Ottawa, Ontario, and corporate office located in Regina, Saskatchewan. With a healthy portfolio of $41.5 billion and 28 consecutive years of portfolio growth, Farm Credit Canada is a strong, stable partner dedicated to serving the Canadian agriculture industry through all economic cycles. The corporation provides financing and other services to almost 100,000 customers. Primary production is Farm Credit Canada’s core business and represents 84.3% of the loan portfolio and there is a strong focus on serving the entire agriculture and agri-food value chain to support the industry in achieving its full potential. Farm Credit Canada shares business management knowledge and training with customers and the industry, free of charge. The corporation offers management and accounting software designed for agriculture. In addition, Farm Credit Canada invests in venture capital funds dedicated to the agriculture and agri-food industry, providing an alternate source of capital and expertise to the growing number of innovative firms that will help the industry achieve new potential.

The President provides leadership of the corporation’s resources and assets and the effectiveness and efficiency of its operations in meeting its mandated objectives. The incumbent is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the corporation. The President is accountable for ensuring the ongoing financial sustainability of the corporation and acts as an effective steward of the corporation’s financial and non-financial resources. The position is responsible for building, mentoring, leading, and retaining a high performing leadership team, an engaged workforce, and a culture characterized by excellence, integrity, collaboration, and community-mindedness. This incumbent is accountable for defining and communicating the strategy and plans to ensure continued renewal, growth, and sustainability of the corporation through ensuring the business development and executive activities result in market share growth.

Education and Experience


  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline (e.g., business, finance, economics, etc.) or an acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience;

  • The following experiences are critical for strong performance in the President role:

  • Experience defining, planning, and shaping strategies and initiatives that set the direction for either an entire organization or a large division within the organization;

  • Experience leading significant scope and scale in a Financial Institution;

  • Experience dealing with key stakeholders outside the organization to gain support on key issues or create a favorable business environment;

  • Leadership experience in a complex organization comprising multiple business units, lines of business, distribution channels, and/or shared services, highly matrixed business model, etc.;

  • Experience leading business that successfully used digital capabilities across the business, with specific understanding of how to leverage data management, data analytics and other commercial applications; and

  • Background in agriculture would be considered an asset.

  • Knowledge and understanding the corporation's customers needs and insight to establish strategy and define priorities for the corporation;

  • Knowledge and experience leading of a results-focused culture, consistently focusing people on meaningful tasks, driving energetic action while fostering organization-wide enthusiasm to achieve results, even when obstacles arise;

  • Ability to clarify and leverage the corporation's key differentiators to define and communicate a long-term vision and strategy;

  • Ability to communicate effectively by actively promoting and consistently driving a free flow of information across all levels of the organization that builds awareness, commitment, and alignment;

  • Ability to build effective teams by developing and cultivating a strong leadership to establish and achieve the organization's strategic objectives;

  • Ability to engage and inspire individuals by fostering a work environment where people feel their contributions will be noticed and valued; expressing and encouraging strong appreciation for people's efforts;

  • Ability to comprehensively communicate goals by emphasizing and reinforcing specific objectives so that priorities are clear throughout the corporation while holding people accountable for their performance; and  

  • Ability to stay calm and positive during times of change; keeping people motivated and energized as transitions unfold; championing change and rallying people to act in the face of ambiguity, uncertainty, and incomplete information.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment

  • All appointees are subject to the Conflicts of Interest Act.
