The National Arts Centre Corporation was established as a federal Crown corporation in 1966, under the National Arts Centre Act, as part of the Centennial celebrations. As a national institution and member of the Canadian Heritage Portfolio, the corporation is responsible for operating and maintaining the National Arts Centre (NAC), developing the performing arts in the National Capital Region, and assisting the Canada Council for the Arts in the development of performing arts elsewhere in Canada.

Specifically, the NAC collaborates with artists and arts organizations across Canada to help create a national stage for the performing arts, and acts as a catalyst for performance, creation and learning across the country. A home for Canada’s most creative artists, the NAC strives to be artistically adventurous in each of its programming streams: the NAC Orchestra, English Theatre, French Theatre, Indigenous Theatre and Dance, as well as NAC Presents, which showcase established and emerging Canadian artists.

The organization is at the forefront of youth and educational activities, offering artist training, programs for children and youth, and resources for teachers in communities across Canada. The NAC is also a pioneer in new media, using technology to teach students and young artists around the globe, by creating top-rated podcasts, and providing a wide range of NAC Orchestra concerts on demand. The NAC is the only bilingual, multidisciplinary performing arts centre in Canada, and one of the largest in the world.

The National Arts Centre Corporation is governed by a Board of Trustees that is expected to provide strategic guidance to management and oversee the activities of the Corporation. It has a duty to act in the best interests of the Corporation and to exercise care and due diligence. The Board is also responsible to evaluate the performance of the Chief Executive Officer on an annual basis. The Board is accountable to the Minister of Canadian Heritage for the stewardship of the Corporation’s management.

If the Chairperson is absent or unable to act or if the office of the Chairperson is vacant, the Vice-Chairperson has all the powers, and may exercise and perform all the duties and functions of the Chairperson.

Education and Experience


  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of education, job-related training and/or experience;

  • Experience on a board of directors/trustees, ideally of a major not-for-profit arts organization;

  • Experience at the senior executive level within the private or public sector;

  • Experience in the development of strategies, objectives, plans, best business practices and in corporate governance;

  • Experience in fundraising activities and revenue generation would also be considered an asset; and

  • Experience in the field of the performing arts would also be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Knowledge of the legislative framework, mandate and activities of the National Arts Centre Corporation;

  • Knowledge of sound governance principles, strategic planning, and the monitoring and evaluation of performance, and financially literate with knowledge of the federal government’s expectations regarding accountability and reporting;

  • Knowledge of the current challenges and opportunities for Canadian cultural institutions;

  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Indigenous cultures;

  • Knowledge of the arts and cultural sectors, and familiarity with a range of artistic disciplines would be an asset;

  • Knowledge in areas of information technology, technological evolution related to digital, or the supporting environment of national creative content would be an asset;

  • Ability to assist the Chairperson in carrying out his/her mandate in accordance with the National Arts Centre Act;

  • Ability to identify, analyze and define priorities and strategies;

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other Board members and the Board’s partners and stakeholders;

  • Ability to recognize and address emerging issues and trends, to seize opportunities, and to advance ideas and innovation; and

  • Superior communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to manage communications with a variety of stakeholders.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment

• Appointees must comply with the Ethical and Political Activity Guidelines for Public Office Holders throughout their appointment as a term and condition of employment. The guidelines are available on the Governor in Council Appointments website under Forms and reference material.

• All appointees are subject to the Conflicts of Interest Act. Public office holders appointed on a full-time basis must also submit to the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics within 60 days of appointment, a confidential report in which they disclose all of their assets, liabilities and outside activities.   • The Board meets approximately four times per year for two and a half days in Ottawa, and conference calls are held for special purposes as required.

  • The successful candidate should expect to commit to the position an average of 20 to 25 days annually.

  • Board members must prepare for Board meetings by having read all pertinent documents, which are sent to members approximately one week in advance.

  • In addition, the Board is encouraged to take part in the life of the National Arts Centre by attending performances and special events. Board members also act as ambassadors for the National Arts Centre in their own communities.

  • Appointees must uphold the highest standards of probity and are expected to demonstrate behaviours in the workplace that afford respect, equality and dignity, to everyone they interact with at work at all times. The Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector outlines the values and expected behaviours for public servants, including valuing diversity and creating workplaces free from harassment and discrimination. Governor in Council appointees are expected to uphold and respect these values and principles in a positive and active manner.
