The North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) is an international inter-governmental organization established by the Convention for the Conservation of Anadromous Stocks in the North Pacific Ocean. The convention was signed on February 11, 1992, and took effect on February 16, 1993. The member countries are Canada, the United States of America Japan, Korea, and Russia.With the primary objective of promoting the conservation of anadromous fish stocks (Pacific salmon and steelhead trout) within its convention area. The NPAFC provides a framework for international cooperation on the scientific research of anadromous species and promotion of enforcement of fisheries regulations.Representatives participate as part of the Fisheries and Oceans Canada NPAFC delegation with a view to ensuring that policy approaches promote the conservation of anadromous fish stocks within the NPAFC convention area. Approaches are based on the best available science, while protecting Canadian interests at NPAFC.
