The National Farm Products Council works on behalf of the Government of Canada to provide oversight of the national supply management agencies for poultry and eggs, as well as to supervise national promotion and research agencies for farm products. The National Farm Products Council is responsible for administering two federal laws: the Farm Products Agencies Act and the Agricultural Products Marketing Act.

The member attends regular NFPC council meetings, providing input on issues being considered.  In addition, at the request of the Chair, the NFPC member may sit on a Complaint Examination Board or Public Hearing panels.

Education and Experience


  • A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job-related training and/or experience;

  • Experience in decision making with respect to sensitive and complex issues;

  • Experience in maintaining effective relationships with and balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders with divergent views; and

  • Experience in one or more of the following:


    • Experience in one or more of the following sectors: food processing, food distribution or retail, research in a field related to agriculture;

    • Experience in business management and operation; and/or

    • Experience as a member of an association, board or cooperative; as a member of a public oversight body or as a member of a regulatory organization, either at the federal or provincial level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • An understanding of the Canadian supply management system for poultry and eggs;

  • A good understanding of the business, political, economic and operational challenges and opportunities facing the Canadian agricultural industry;

  • Knowledge of sound governance principles, strategic planning, monitoring and performance measurement;

  • Analytical skills and the ability to understand and interpret quantitative and qualitative information;

  • Ability to establish, sustain and foster relationships;

  • Ability to reconcile varying interest and values;

  • Ability to understand, interpret and evaluate financial statements and budgets; and

  • Superior communication skills.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment


  • Appointees must comply with the Ethical and Political Activity Guidelines for Public Office Holders throughout their appointment as a term and condition of employment. The guidelines are available on the Governor in Council Appointments website, under Forms and reference material.

  • All appointees will be subject to the Conflict of Interest Act. Public office holders appointed on a full-time basis must also submit to the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, within 60 days of appointment, a confidential report in which they disclose all of their assets, liabilities and outside activities.   • Appointees must uphold the highest standards of probity and are expected to demonstrate behaviors in the workplace that afford respect, equality and dignity, to everyone they interact with at work at all times. The Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector outlines the values and expected behaviors for public servants, including valuing diversity and creating workplaces free from harassment and discrimination. Governor in Council appointees are expected to uphold and respect these values and principles in a positive and active manner.

  • A person who has reached the age of seventy years is not eligible to be appointed a member of the Council, and a member thereof ceases to hold office on reaching the age of seventy years (statutory).

  • At least fifty per cent of the members of the Council, not taking into account the chairperson thereof, shall be primary producers at the time of appointment (statutory).

  • Equal representation from the four Western provinces, the two Central provinces and the four Atlantic provinces will be set as a target (statutory).

  • The successful candidate must be able and willing to travel to attend regular meetings, complaint examinations and public hearings, as well as to attend meetings virtually. Members are required to travel, attend meetings in person and/or attend virtual meetings on approximately 50 to 80 days per year.
