The Inuvialuit Arbitration Board has the jurisdiction to arbitrate any differences between the Inuvialuit, industry, Governments of Canada, Northwest Territories or Yukon as to the meaning, interpretation, application or implementation of the Western Artic (Inuvialuit) Final Agreement. The Board has the jurisdiction to hear disputes relating to enrolment under the Western Artic (Inuvialuit) Final Agreement, land matters, subsurface resource claims, sand and gravel, participation agreements, and wildlife compensation awards.

The role of the member includes participating in the arbitration process for issues within the jurisdiction of the Arbitration Board, including sitting on arbitration panels as designated by the chairperson.

Education and Experience


  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job-related training or experience;

  • Certification as an arbitrator or mediator would be considered an asset;

  • Experience on a board of directors;

  • Experience in the interpretation and application of legislation and regulations;

  • Experience in dealing with senior representatives of different levels of government and the private sector;

  • Experience working in land claims contexts and/or with Northern issues;

  • Experience in the operation and conduct of an arbitration panel or adjudicative tribunal, an agency or equivalent would be considered an asset; and

  • Demonstrated experience in decision making with respect to sensitive and complex issues in a quasi-judicial environment would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Knowledge of the mandate and activities of the Inuvialuit Arbitration Board as well as the land claim, constitutional and legislative framework within which it operates;

  • Knowledge of constitutional, Indigenous, resources and administrative law and processes;

  • Knowledge of sound governance principles, monitoring and evaluation of performance;

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate complex evidence in order to make sound and equitable decisions while anticipating their short- and long-term consequences;

  • Ability to foster debate and discussion among Board members in order to facilitate consensus;

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with board members, stakeholders, public institutions, senior government officials and other organizations;

  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to manage communications with a variety of stakeholders; and

  • Proficiency in Inuvialuktun would be considered an asset.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.
