The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada is a federal research funding organization that aims to make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians. The organization invests over $1.2 billion each year in natural sciences and engineering research in Canada. Its investments deliver discoveries—valuable world-firsts in knowledge pursued by a brain trust of over 11,000 professors. These investments also enable partnerships and collaborations that connect industry with discoveries and the people behind them. Academic-industry partnerships supported by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada help advance research and development, solve scale-up challenges, and mitigate the risks of developing new technologies.Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada also provides scholarships and hands-on training experience for more than 30,000 post-secondary students and post-doctoral fellows. These young researchers will be the next generation of science and engineering leaders in Canada. The organization has a governing council consisting of the President and up to 18 other members. The governing council’s main responsibilities are to set the strategy and high level policies for the organization, and to review and evaluate its performance. The governing council works to achieve the greatest strategic impact for Canada from the expenditure of public funds, and ensures that public funds are allocated in a manner that maximizes research outcomes. The President is the chief executive officer of the organization and has supervision over and direction of the ongoing work of the organization and its staff.
