The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL/the Corporation) results from the amalgamation of the former Federal Bridge Corporation Limited with Blue Water Bridge Authority. It has a mandate to engage in a range of activities to ensure that the international bridges and related infrastructure in its portfolio are safe, secure, efficient, environmentally sound and well-maintained. The Corporation’s portfolio currently includes Canadian interests in: the Blue Water Bridge in Point Edward, Ontario; the Seaway International Bridge (SIB) in Cornwall, Ontario; the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and the Thousand Islands Bridge at Lansdowne, Ontario. In support of these operations, the Corporation’s activities include the design, construction, financing maintenance, operation, management or development of international bridges or other affiliated structures or facilities or activities.

The Board is responsible for the management of business activities and other affairs of the Corporation. It discharges its responsibility by way of oversight of the Corporation in a manner that is fully consistent with its fiduciary duty and duty of care. The Board also evaluates the Corporation’s performance, monitor the Corporation’s financial plans and results and monitor and evaluate the performance of the Chief Executive Officer and approve the annual financial statements, budgets and audit results. The Board will ensure the integrity and adequacy of the Corporation’s information systems and management practices, and ensure that the Corporation is identifying and managing its major risks.

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study, or an acceptable combination of education, job-related training and/or experience;

  • Experience serving as a chairperson or member of a board of directors for a public or private sector organization or as a senior executive answerable to stakeholders in the public or private sector;

  • Leadership experience at the senior executive level, including managing human and financial resources and dealing with senior representatives of government or the private sector;

  • Experience in the transportation industry, or infrastructure, or large scale operations and/or projects or asset management;

  • Experience in international relations and/or building and maintaining strong relationship with First Nations would be considered an asset ; and

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas would be considered an asset: transportation industry; enhancing customer experience; safety and security; community engagement; public policy; trade; logistics; infrastructure revitalization and project management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited’s mandate, mission, strategic priorities, and business activities;

  • Knowledge of the role and responsibilities of the Chairperson, the Board of Directors, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited, including fundamental accountabilities to the Government of Canada as shareholder;

  • Knowledge of the public policy environment facing a Crown corporation, and a general understanding of the legislative environment in which it operates, including the Financial Administration Act, International Bridges and Tunnels Act ;

  • Knowledge of strategic corporate planning, monitoring, and evaluation of corporate performance;

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with local Indigenous groups, Canadian and American municipal governments and Canadian provincial government agencies and/or authorities;

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with the Minister, the Deputy Minister, and the Corporation’s business partners and stakeholders;

  • Ability to anticipate emerging issues and lead organizational change;

  • Ability to foster debate and discussion among Board members to facilitate consensus; and

  • Strong communications skills, both written and oral, and the ability to act as a spokesperson for the Corporation in dealing with the media, public institutions, governments and other organizations.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

  • No officer or employee of the Corporation or any of its affiliates, other than the President and Chief Executive Officer, shall be a director of the corporation (statutory).

  • If you are appointed to this position, you must reside in or be willing to relocate to the National Capital Region, or to a location within a reasonable commuting distance.

  • If you are appointed to this position, you must willing to travel across Canada and internationally.
