As an administrative tribunal with quasi-judicial powers, the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada (TATC) has the responsibility of processing and deciding reviews and appeals of decisions from the Department of Transport and some decisions from the Canadian Transportation Agency.

Members will be called to adjudicate review and appeal hearings. Members function as independent, administrative tribunal decision-makers mandated to provide fair and impartial quasi-judicial review and appeal hearings.

Education and Experience


  • A degree from a recognized university or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, training and job-related experience;

  • A law degree would be considered an asset;

  • Experience in one of the federally-regulated transportation sectors (aeronautics, rail, motor vehicle, marine) or as a medical practitioner;

  • Experience in gathering and assessing complex information in order to make decisions and in chairing meetings; and

  • Experience in using a computer for communication, research and word processing (Microsoft Word).

If you move on to the next stage of the selection process, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Knowledge of administrative law, principles of natural justice and practices followed by administrative tribunals and the TATC;

  • Knowledge of the review and appeal processes and the operations of the TATC, including the regulations that govern its activities;

  • Knowledge of the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada Act and other applicable legislation and regulations;

  • Knowledge of the transportation sector in Canada would be considered an asset;

  • Ability to interpret various statutes and related regulations in an adjudicative context;

  • Ability to effectively conduct hearings of an adjudicative tribunal and to write clear and well-reasoned determinations and decisions;

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;

  • Ability to maintain self-control and defuse tense situations;

  • Ability to think conceptually, isolate, synthesize and analyze information; and

  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, as well as within a team.


In addition, candidates should demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities related to at least one of the following streams:

Marine Sector

  • Knowledge of the relevant marine transportation legislation such as the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, the Marine Transportation Security Act, as well as related regulations;

  • Knowledge of relevant international agreements within the marine sector; and

  • Knowledge of the marine transportation mode, marine practices and community.


Medical Hearings

  • Significant knowledge of medicine applied to one or more of the federally-regulated transportation sectors; and

  • Retired or practicing medical physician.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

  • If you are appointed to this position you must work from your home office in Canada and have access to high-speed internet.

  • If you are appointed to this position, you must be willing to travel to the National Capital Region and across Canada regularly, as required.
