The North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) is an international organization, established under a 1984 Convention. NASCO’s objective is to conserve, restore, enhance, and rationally manage wild Atlantic salmon through international cooperation, taking into account the best available scientific information. There are seven parties to NASCO: Canada, Denmark (in respect of the Faroe Islands and Greenland), the European Union, Norway, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. NASCO also has 35 accredited non-governmental organizations. Members of Canada’s delegation, led by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, participate in one fisheries management decision-making process periodically, in addition to a number of working groups and intersessional meetings. Canadian representatives participate as part of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s NASCO delegation. Canada’s objective at NASCO is to ensure that policy approaches to conservation and management of wild Atlantic salmon agreed to at NASCO are based on the best available science, take into account a precautionary approach, and consider socio-economic impacts on Canadians.
